May 3 – Lk 20:41-21:11 – “See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying “I am he,” and “The time has come” (Lk 21:8)
As a disciple of Jesus, I walk securely in His footsteps. The Gospel fills my mind and heart, shaping everything I think, I say, and do. But at times my concentration is taken by other voices, other people who confuse me with their “signs” and their “truths.” And they may be quite convincing as well. When I listen to them, I, too, tend to believe that all they say is true. This is right, that is wrong. This one is a faithful Christian, the other is not. What am I to do?
Deception is not always easy to spot. The only I can be safe is to ground me more and more in the truth of the Gospel. This truth is not dependent on my agreement to it, it has nothing to do with the opinions of this group or the other one. The truth is the truth because of who spoke it. Against all these opposing and deceiving voices, I stand even more firmly on the Gospel and the teaching of the Church (of today!). If a voice does not tend to love, charity and unity I will run away. The “side effects” of the truth cannot be in opposition to what God has established. So, silencing the voice becomes easier.
