May 1 – Luke 20:1-19 – “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things” (Lk 20:8)
Jesus is talking to the authorities of the time who asked Him to show them by whose authority He is doing all that He was doing. Jesus understands that no matter what He would say, they would engage Him in more discussion, putting opinions against opinions. Jesus instead asks them a question about John the Baptist. They choose not to answer because they were not willing to face the reaction of the people.
As a disciple of Jesus, I also sometimes am faced, and facing, issues of authority; like Jesus, I am also asked to explain myself. But I have to understand that I cannot ignore this, as I cannot avoid taking a stance on what matters to God, and to me. Very often I too try to compromise too much, and as a result, I cannot hear Jesus answering my questions. I can only relate to Him in truth, and therefore I will avoid all the “half-answers” that I want to give Him sometimes. He deserves my all.
